Bed safety rails, meant to protect the elderly and frail, instead can kill

Bed safety rails, meant to protect the elderly and frail, instead can kill

Gloria Black holds a photograph of her mother, Clara Marshall, pictured with her father, while sitting in her home in Portland, Oregon, October 2, 2013. Black also holds the bed rail that was on her mother’s bed at the time of her mother’s death. The coroner’s report states that her mother rolled over compressing her neck on the rail at the time of her death. Thousands of elderly people have died or been injured after becoming trapped in the safety rails installed to keep them from falling out of bed, but the government and industry have yet to impose mandatory – or even voluntary – standards for the product.
